WHAT IS A DIGITAL PORTFOLIO?

With the help of digital portfolios students can show their personal growth and development. They consist of meaningful collections off materials in a personalized environment.

Portfolios are interactive. Teachers, students or even external educators provide feedback on the materials and design. In primary and secondary school portfolios facilitate the learning of IT skills and media literacy. In higher education portfolios eventually serve as digital business cards on the job market.

Within portfolio.education students themselves are the owner of their portfolio. They can easily upload materials that they themselves produced. Different kinds of multimedia (movies, images, audio) and links to social media make portfolios come to life.

Digital portfolios have three functions:

CONTENT

Students create, manage and share their work within their digital portfolios. In this way they build a personal collection with which they demonstratie their skills and knowledge. The educational facility ultimately determines what skills and competences materials are expected to be exhibited.

WordPress can handle most types of multimedia. It supports audio, image and video files out of the box. So students are not confined solely to writing texts. In addition it can also be used as a file/document explorer.

DESIGN

Students can design their portfolios themselves. They can choose from hundreds of theme’s and subsequently adjust and personalize the look and feel to their own content. With the help of certain plugins they can extend the functionality of their portfolios. You can built anything you want with WordPress.

It is up to the educational facility to determine to what degree students are free to personalize.

PRIVACY

The educational sector, like many others, increasingly makes use of digital applications. Consequently more (personal) data is being stored and exchanged. It is very important that this is done with great care and responsibility.

Within portfolio.education organizations can make their own didactic assessment of whether material posted by students is accessible to everyone within the organization, or whether it is visible to certain groups within the organization. The user can always choose to keep his publications private.

“Students make a lot of art: We think it is important that they can show this work to their parents or during further training. It is our own digital exhibition space”
